Changes related to the threats, terrain and tactics of the new battlefields have forced the armed forces to modernize their fleets with platforms that respond to the war of the 21st century. As a result, modern armoured vehicles must incorporate technological advances in the areas of survival, connectivity, mobility, maneuverability and sustainability.

Finding an optimal balance between protection, payload and performance are key elements in the design of new armored vehicles.

Current solutions based on hardened steel alloys penalize the weight and affect the mobility of vehicles. The armed forces are looking for a solution combining lightness (for increased mobility), increased radius of action (fuel consumption) and protection against explosions (shielding).  

The ideal armouring solution passes through composite materials and ceramic alloys. The nano reinforcement of these materials is therefore a solution of choice.

Armouring panels (Add-Ons) and shielding elements for vehicle

Nano SiC is a component of choice for the reinforcement of composites and polymers (HHMWPE type) used for vehicle armouring.

In theory it allows an improvement of the armouring properties of the existing materials:

  • Fracture resistance

  • Limits the rear deformation of the armour

  • Improved hardness of composite  

 

The benefits of these improvements (mainly in terms of lightness) are improved protection for men in action, reduced armor weights or Add Ons, then resulting in increased mobility and action range of armoured vehicles.

Strengthening of individual protective equipment

Helmets: Incorporation of nano SiC in thermoplastic composites used in the manufacture of military helmets, improves impact resistance and fracture strength with significant weight gain.
